    September 3rd, 2010

    Photography Lori Waselchuk

DiverseWorks kicks off the 2010-2011 season with an exhibition and symposium that commemorates the 5th Anniversary of Hurricane Katrina.  Before (During) After and the accompanying Under-standing Water provide a visual narrative of how one of the U.S.’s largest natural disasters transformed the lives of artists from Southeast Louisiana.  Before (During) After specifically explores the changes in subject matter, media, and technique from the work created before thestorm to after in an effort to investigate how shared experience is individually captured, filtered and re-conveyed.

Photographers participating in Before (During) After include: Eric Julian, Elizabeth Kleinveld, Rowan Metzner, David Rae Morris, Thomas Neff, Samuel Portera, Frank Relle, Jennifer Shaw, Mark J. Sindler, Zack Smith, Jonathan Traviesa, and Lori Waselchuck. Under-Standing Water features sculptural installations by Rondell Crier, Jana Napoli and Rontherin Ratliff with a monumental photographic work by Jan Gilber, Debra Howell and Krista Jurisich.   The works connect viewers to the perceptions, experiences, and memories of six artists whose lives were impacted by the storm.  Running concurrently in flickerlounge, DiverseWorks in partnership with Aurora Picture Show presents Brent Joseph’s A Loud Color and YO-TVs Still Standing, two films that explore challenges faced by storm survivors as they attempt to rebuild their lives.

    The Bright Light Social Hour

    October 19th, 2009

    R1- 9

Backstage at the Dell sponsored lounge at Austin City Limits provided theblvdmag.com an opportunity to meet newbie rock band, The Bright Light Social Hour. This four member band made up of lead vocalist and guitarist A.J. Vincent, keyboardist Jack O’Brien, guitarist Curtis Rausch, and drummer Jo Mirasole was selected as the opening act of the festival at the Dell stage after winning the ‘Sound and the Jury’ contest at Antones in Austin.

After seeing the passion that overtook the band during the performance people wanted to know more about the band.

“It’s a community building name inspired from a quote I heard in class around the idea of social optimism and community building,” Rausch said. It’s no doubt that The Bright Light Social Hour got the ACL community involved. This local band with a small following had the entire crowd of people rocking out to their music. Their influences range from bands such as Tower of Power and Sly and the Family Stone. One of Sly’s albums “got stuck in [Jack’s] C.D. player for like six months and that’s all that he listened to.”

The Bright Light Social Hour had their opportunity to make their mark in ACL history and will continue to get their shine as they gain popularity on the airwaves. Do yourself a favor and check out the Bright Light Social Hour, they have a mesmerizing sound that will keep your foot tapping, hands clapping, and head bobbing to the beat.
